In home high speed connectivity has removed the assumption that the pool and spa systems will need to be hooked up to home automation systems to function efficiently. Most systems do not require home automation whatsoever to function.
When working with systems that come with an app and are controlled by handheld devices, some home automation professionals have just decided to keep the two systems separate from home automation entirely and encourage homeowners to toggle between the two apps — one for the smart home controls and the other for the pool and waterscape features. In part, this is to preserve all the advanced features of the pool and spa system. Because they use a different language than their smart home counterparts, in many cases, the installed smart home control panel or app can’t control certain pool and spa functions.
While it’s true that both home automation systems and pool automation systems rely more on the Internet, experts such as Peter Sandford prefer to have both systems hard wired to internet as well as have wifi access as a back up. WiFi is not consistent, It’s slower, and it is subject to all kinds of interference, like steel beams in houses, heavy lumber, concrete flooring, steel reinforced walls and glass windows. It’s essential to have hard wiring in a smart home with additional wiring to the smart pool controller to make sure connectivity is stable and uninterrupted.
Thanks to the Internet of things, the on wall pool control panels themselves have become less important. They can now be placed somewhere out of sight, such as the equipment rack room or other inconspicuous locations meant to hide wires, hardware and technology.
